Frequently Asked Questions
The answers to questions we keep getting asked (and a few we asked ourselves)
slowstack is a Minecraft server scanner that got a little out of hand. We index tens of thousands of servers and collect publicly available data like server names, player counts, versions, and player lists. Think of it as Google, but for Minecraft servers.
The same way your Minecraft client does — we pinged it. If your server is publicly reachable and responds to the standard server list ping, we probably found it. We're not doing anything your game client doesn't already do, we're just doing it... to all of them.
We use the standard Minecraft server list ping protocol to query servers. This returns the server MOTD, player count, max players, version info, and the sample player list (if enabled). This is the same information any Minecraft client sees when pinging a server.
We cross-reference Twitch streams with our server database to figure out which Minecraft server a streamer is playing on. Then we show you the IP. You're welcome.
For each player, we track their UUID, username, current presence (when reported by servers), and recent session history (up to 30 days). Players are identified from the sample player list that servers broadcast, which typically shows a random subset of online players.
We collect the server IP and port, MOTD (description), version name and protocol, current and max player counts, favicon, secure chat enforcement, chat preview settings, country location, and Forge mod lists from supported versions.
We show exactly what servers tell us. Some servers hide their player list, show only a few players, or straight-up lie about who's online. If the data looks weird, blame the server — we're just the messenger.
Give it a minute — we might not have gotten to it yet. It could also be offline, behind a proxy, or just not reachable on a public IP. We can't scan what we can't reach.
We store player session history for up to 30 days, including join times, leave times, and session duration. We may retain aggregated player-server associations (first/last seen) beyond 30 days. We do not store historical server uptime or server state data.
